Established in 1877, Zion Miners Chapel—has been a historical cornerstone of Llanhilleth in Gwent, South Wales. Located on High Street, we were established to serve the rapidly expanding local mining population during the height of the Welsh coal industry. As a chapel, we were deeply intertwined with both the spiritual and social lives of the colliery workers and their families. Alongside the other social buildings in Llanhilleth our lovely chapel was paid for by the miners of Llanhilleth Colliery ( Llanhilleth Old School, Llanhilleth Miners Institute, Aberbeeg Hospital and the Playhouse Theatre).
Throughout the 20th century, we were much more than just a place of worship; we acted as a vital community hub. Local historical archives highlight our active role in hosting various community groups and events, including Sunday Schools, youth clubs and choir concerts.
We are also as a place of Remembrance. We have long honoured the sacrifices of our brave men and women who paid the ultimate price and who lost their lives in the First and Second World War and other conflicts since. Today, we remain an important historical landmark, reflecting the rich industrial and Christian heritage of the Gwent valleys.
